Moksha Patam
Unlike modern gameplay, Moksha Patam is not a game of chance — it’s a tool of profound introspection, guided by divine will. The board consists of 72 to 108 numbered squares, each representing different energies, emotions, virtues, and vices that the soul may encounter through various lifetimes. Snakes represent lower states of consciousness or karmic pitfalls, while ladders represent spiritual growth, virtues, and divine grace.

Ancient board. Modern insight.
Moksha Patam, the precursor to Snakes and Ladders, originated in 13th-century India as a moral teaching tool designed by the saint Sant Dnyaneshwar. The game taught the Hindu concepts of karma and destiny, with snakes representing vices that led to setbacks and ladders representing virtues that brought advancement on the path to spiritual liberation (Moksha). The game was introduced to the West by British colonial rulers and eventually evolved into the modern, less religiously focused game of Snakes and Ladders.
